Title
A lesson on pronunciation or pronunciation within a lesson?

Abstract

The aim of this workshop is to share with participants the findings and the reactions of teachers on the integration of pronunciation work carried out in EFL classes at IEU. Because most of the EFL materials are produced for an international audience (yet these materials are as often as not used for monolingual classes), the pronunciation syllabi that exist are treated both generally and isolated. As a result, teachers do not give it the deserved importance it should be given ( Murcia,1996). This is understandable. Many are the reasons that prevent teachers from doing, let alone integrating, pronunciation work into a standard EFL lesson: lack of knowledge, lack of time, lack of priority and fear of the unknown. Last but not least, there is the perception that a student’s pronunciation will sort itself out in its own time after class  “automatically” and  “autonomously”. The workshop will include a short video clip of part of a lesson where pronunciation is being integrated followed by the findings and reactions from three different perspectives: that of the teacher-trainer doing pronunciation work; that of a teacher-observer ( whose class was being taught ); and that of the trainer-researcher.  Results show that the majority of the teachers whose classes had been taught by the trainer reacted very favourably and showed a certain degree of enthusiasm in doing pronunciation work in various types of lessons in the future.
