Title
Teachers Implementation on Contextual Learning during
Professional in-service Training
Abstract
This study was conducted related to teacher certification during professional in-service training for teachers at Teacher Education Institution (TEI) in Tanjungpura University, Indonesia. This research focused on the method of teachers’ strategies in language teaching during their peer teaching in the training. The data in this study collected through documentary, questionnaires, interview, and observation. The documentary was about their lesson plan whilst questionnaires focused on their perception on contextual learning in language teaching. Observation of their teaching methodology accomplished in peer teaching (three times), then followed by interview. In developing their lesson plans, it showed that most of those teachers in the training focus on the knowledge of the language, teacher centered activities, and text book based.
The most interesting finding is the result of the first peer teaching. Although the current language teaching emphasized on communicative competence, yet most teachers still focused on the knowledge of the language rather than the function. In addition, they used School Based Curriculum in their teaching development which emphasized on contextual teaching and learning, but their teaching methods mostly dominated by grammar translation method and teacher centered activities. During the interview, they argued that they still used grammar translation method because most of the questions in National Examination are about grammar. However, they believed that the training was beneficial for them in refreshing their professionalism in language teaching. The recommendation of this research is that the changes of curriculum should be coherent with the socialization and training for teachers.
