The Examle of Erciyes University
Abstract
The English coursebook New English File written by Clive Oxenden, Christina Lantham and Paul Seligson and published by Oxford University Press in 2004 is preferred by many of both state and private universities in Turkey. The aim of this study was to (a) evaluate the coursebook based on the perceptions of foreign language instructors in terms of general impression, technical quality, cultural differences, approriacy, motivation, pedagogic analysis, guidance and supplementary materials, (b) investigate whether there was a difference between female and male instructors’ views on the coursebook and (c) find out the relationship between the instructors’ year of teaching and their evaluations.
26 foreign language instructors at Erciyes University School of Foreign Languages participated in the study and data was collected through The Coursebook Evaluation Checklist. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test analysis and correlation analysis were used to analyze data. The technical quality, the pedagogic analysis and general impression were the most positive aspects of the coursebook while the overall cultural tone of it was the most negative one. Analysis of the data revealed a statistically significant difference between male and female instructors in terms of their evaluations of the cultural tone of the coursebook. Finally, no relationship was found between the year of experience and instructors’ overall evaluations of the sections; however, some particular items in the sections were positively and negatively related to the instructors’ year of experience.
