Title
How do non-native pre-service English language teachers perceive ELF? A qualitative study

Abstract

As important as understanding who speaks English today, who teaches it is of high importance as well. There is a consensus on the need of a comprehensive orientation for ELF teacher development in the related literature (Jenkins, 2005; Seidlhofer, 2004). In line with this argument, the non-native pre-service English language teachers might be the invisible gate-keepers who will open the doors to ELF and thus deserve to generate a great deal of interest in the field. The purpose of the present study is to explore what non-native pre-service English language teachers know, think and believe about ELF and how they approach it with respect to their future teaching practices. The study investigates the issue from the perspective of 10 non-native pre-service English language teachers in an expanding circle country i.e., Turkey.  Data gathered from semi-structured interviews are analyzed by means of pattern coding (Miles & Huberman, 1994). The results will be discussed in detail during the session.
