Title
Incorporating Learner and Teacher Perspectives into Programme Evaluation
The aim of the study was to obtain feedback from students and teachers regarding the programme, and to utilise the data for programme improvement and curriculum renewal. Student satisfaction, and teacher opinions and suggestions in areas such as course content, course materials, assessment of the course and teaching were investigated, and points to be improved were identified. The study consists of three phases. The first phase of the study was completed in the academic year 2006 – 2007. Data was collected from the participants through a closed-item questionnaire and focus groups, and the students’ perspectives were consulted while deciding on an action plan for programme improvement. Changes were implemented based on the results of the study in the following academic year (2007-2008), and the same data collection means were utilised to evaluate the efficiency of the renewed programme. This process constituted the second phase of the study. In the third phase of the study, which was completed in the academic year 2008-2009, data was gathered from both the learners and the teachers by the use of the same qualitative and quantitative instruments.
The research reveals that curriculum renewal should be a cyclical and ongoing process which should continue throughout the life of the curriculum. It, furthermore, exemplifies that the learners and the teachers of a language programme can provide extremely valuable insight for programme improvement.
