Title
Attitudinal and Motivational Factors: a Major Concern of English Language Learning in Pakistan
Abstract
English language is at the heart of quality of learning in Pakistan. Recently HEC of Pakistan has made it compulsory for every graduate to get pass English language test for the award of degree at Masters Level. This study aimed to identify the factors to enhance the quality of English Language Learning (ELL) in the perspective of attitude and motivation towards ELL in our social and monolingual setting. Students of 8th grade in Punjab were the population of the study; a sample of 1300 students was selected using stratified cluster random sampling technique giving proportionate weight-age to each of the stratum namely male, female, urban and rural. The major purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between 8th grade students’ attitudinal and motivational orientation and possible effects of gender, locality and influence of parents. The researchers adapted Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) developed by Gardner (1985) to measure attitude and motivation. Analysis of data revealed that there was a strong relationship between learners' parents’ qualification level and their attitude towards ELL. Those subjects whose parents had comparatively high qualification generally showed more positive attitude. Similarly, those subjects whose parents were teachers or Govt. servants showed comparatively more positive attitude as compared to the subjects whose parents were laborer or farmers. A more positive attitude of the urban female students was investigated as compared to other groups. Researchers recommend that English language teaching at elementary level should focus on maintain and motivating ELL environment that consequently might help to improve learning quality at higher education level.
