Title:
Exploring potential linkages between CBI and EIL
Abstract:
Recognizing that the majority of commercially produced language-learning materials continue to perpetuate the notion that native-speaker varieties of English should be adopted as the target for teaching and learning, this paper offers a number of examples of how teachers might utilize content-based instruction (CBI) to promote student awareness of other varieties of English. It is argued that by engaging students in the learning of new information through different World Englishes, instructors can help students gain a better appreciation of how English as an International Language need not be defined according to any single variety. It is also suggested that a CBI approach better reflects how language students are approaching English today: as something that is necessary for the acquisition and exchange of academic or technical knowledge, rather than as a means to integrate themselves into a different culture.
