Title
The Effect of Interactional Versus Transactional Aural Texts on the Iranian EFL Learners’ Speaking Ability
Abstract
In this research, the effect of interactional versus transactional aural texts on the Iranian EFL learners’ speaking ability was investigated. First, through a Nelson test and a test of oral interview which was also used as the pretest, 50 homogeneous subjects were selected from among 172 higher elementary English students in Tehran, Iran. They were randomly put in two groups, 25 in each, and their homogenity in terms of general English proficiency and speaking was ensured via two F-tests. The inter-rater reliability and validity of the pretest oral interview was also calculated through a series of correlational analyses. Then, the treatment began which consisted of 10 consecutive sessions, each session 100 minutes long.
During the treatment period, the students in first group were taught interactional aural texts while the students in second group took transactional aural texts. After the treatment, another oral interview test was administered to the students of both groups as the posttest. The analysis of the data on the posttest and pretest of each group through two matched t-tests showed that the students in first group had developed their speaking skill significantly, whereas the students in second group had no significant achievement. The result of a simple t-test for the posttest of first and second groups also revealed that there was a significant difference between the two groups when the treatment was accomplished. These results can confirm the great effect of interactional aural texts on the Iranian EFL learners’ speaking ability.
