Title
English Language Activities for Cross Cultural Awareness and Understanding

Abstract:

Language learning helps expand learners’ view of the world and challenges their taken-for-granted view of the world. In order to benefit from cross-cultural understanding, learners need to have cultural awareness of both their own culture and those of others. They need to see their own cultural norms critically, rather than as natural and correct behaviour. Because English has become a common code that links cultures across the world today, this can be achieved by involving learners in language use and language in context and encouraging them to explore cultural values exemplified in language activities. An awareness and understanding of other cultures need not be taught isolated, but rather should be a natural part of language instruction. Language activities that also involve critical reflection on language and culture provide an awareness of other modes of thought other than one’s own and encourage respect for others. This paper discusses the importance and benefits of cross cultural awareness and how it can be fostered through language learning activities. It also provides sample classroom activities for cross cultural awareness.
