Title
EIL in an Actual Lesson
Abstract
The recent research movement, English as an International Language (EIL), seems to appear as a result of the widespread use of English as a means of communication mostly by non-native speakers outnumbering the native ones. Although there has been some research about attitudes towards EIL, the theory behind the EIL movement, and its revolutionary influence on ELT policies, testing, curriculum development, pedagogy, teacher education and course books; a sample lesson incorporating the features of EIL has not been illustrated yet. This study is an attempt to demonstrate an actual lesson exposing learners to English speakers from various backgrounds and cultures by integrating instructional materials that represent the international culture and different varieties of English so that learners’ awareness about the changing status of English and the importance of intercultural communication can be raised. After discussing the general pedagogical implications of EIL and its evaluation as a future possibility in the Turkish EFL setting, a sample EIL lesson plan will be presented at the end. |
