Abstract
Virginia Woolf was one of the most distinctive authors who used the stream of consciousness technique in English Literature successfully. What made her use of stream of consciousness technique different from the others is her artistry creating a poetic effect while playing with the words in her works. Woolf’s use of stream of consciousness technique is known to be one of the most challenging techniques to deal with in teaching. Nevertheless if the thematic analysis of her narrative is combined with some of the rhetorical devices used by Woolf frequently, the learners will be able to grasp the meaning hidden in the depth of stream of consciousness narrative. In this paper, I would like to focus on the use of some rhetorical devices used by Virginia Woolf in one of her masterpieces, To the Lighthouse. This will show that Woolf’s use of stream of consciousness technique accompanied by rhythm as one of the most important results of some structural devices creates a poetic effect which one cannot help admiring following the lines. I would like to point out that the role of some structural devices including sentence structure ought to be elaborated in teaching such a difficult narrative.
