Abstract
The role of strategy use in reading comprehension has been an intensive topic of discussion among reading researchers in the L2 reading context. Findings of previous research have revealed that successful L2 readers know how to use appropriate strategies in reading as compared to their counterparts. These strategies include cognitive, metacognitive and support strategies such as contextual guessing, utilizing background knowledge, recognizing text structure and others. Although much research has been done on cognitive and metaconitive strategies, little emphasis has been given on support reading strategies. These strategies such as note taking and using dictionary are basic support mechanisms that are additionally used to help learners enhance their comprehension of the text. The objective of this paper is to explore the use of support reading strategies when reading online among a group of Malaysian ESL learners. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires from a sample of 200 first year university students. The findings revealed that students used support strategies for different purposes. These findings are important as they will provide the framework for the development of support reading strategies oriented toward online reading modules for ESL learners in tertiary level. The paper concludes by discussing some central questions concerning the learning and teaching of support reading strategies in the second language classroom and its implications for L2 instruction.
