Title
Planning and Implementing a Teacher Training Workshop for English Teachers in Hong Kong
Abstract
This presentation will focus on how a teacher training workshop for English teachers at a secondary school in Hong Kong was recently planned and implemented.
As one of the world’s largest business, transportation and financial centers, Hong Kong has consistently placed a high premium on English. Students in Hong Kong normally study English as a subject in school and many secondary schools also offer English as the medium of instruction for other subjects as well.
As part of its teaching staff development, one secondary school arranged for a 23 hour in-house training course on teaching methodologies for English teachers. Six sessions of 3-6 hours were planned and then over a six week period these course sessions were implemented. The objective of the course was to “provide professional training for English teachers on teaching methodologies with focus on reading and speaking skills.” The outcomes for the 15 participants upon completion of the course were to acquire skills and knowledge in four main areas:
- Selecting and sorting related teaching materials
- Designing related curriculum and teaching plans
- Designing and using appropriate methods of assessment
- Teaching reading and speaking skills by using effective approaches
The presentation will include a discussion of how the sessions were planned and implemented and what materials were used in order to accomplish the course objective and learner outcomes.
