Abstract
The paper begins by examining the various ways in which present-day English use has been characterized, calling for a view of English that recognizes changing world orders and its subsequent impact on local linguistic ecology. This is followed by a summary of major research findings regarding English language teaching and learning in an age of globalization; and how these findings are related to the issues of language identity, language standards and language teaching methodology.
The next section provides a summative reflection on the politics and place of English as a world language and closes with principles that should inform a socially sensitive English pedagogy.
