Abstract

English, both spoken and written has been  taught in all levels in the Philippine Educational system. The Philippine government since the coming of the Americans has given great emphasis on learning the English language. However , the result of interviews to the first years students in Centro Escolar University, Philippines show that they are not satisfied with their  spoken skills and therefore  are not ready to compete internationally.

Rubin and Thompson’s study revealed that the younger the child  is, the easier for him/her to learn another language. In connection with that study,  the Philippine government require the teaching of the English language from  nursery, kindergarten, and   in preparatory  schools .

The result of such requirement, however does not guarantee that all students learn the English language so easily. In another study, they found out that adults are often better motivated than children; They learn the spoken English by enrolling in some Speech Improvement classes because speaking in English  is necessary for their chosen careers  in   customer service, teaching  or   call centers. Some teenagers and adults learn speaking in English more easily because they are motivated by some intrinsic factors like attitude toward learning the language, desire to be acknowledged and to be admired.

Successful language learning  may have to do with the way learners feel towards learning the language and the people using the language . The learner  may admire the people who fluently use the language and may aspire to be like them .Such positive attitude serves as their motivating factor to learn the spoken English  or any language in general.

Hypothetically, the researcher thinks that the attitude , along with other factors affect the students competency  in spoken English. With this in mind, the researcher  decided to conduct a study on the attitude of the learners  toward Spoken English as well as the  factors  motivating  them to learn.

Key Words:- Philippines ESL, Motivating  Factors, role models
