Language Teaching
Presenter
Arlene S. Opina, Ph.D
Centro Escolar University, Makati City
Philippines
Abstract:-
With the spread of virtual technology, online instruction is gaining acceptance as an alternative to traditional classroom setting. However, since it is relatively a new means of getting knowledge, questions that have been thoroughly studied for traditional classrooms may need to be revisited for internet-based instruction.
There are still no modules for online learning that have been developed in the English Department of Centro Escolar University, Philippines. With this in mind, the researcher decided to develop online materials and validate them to come up with some recommendations applicable to Philippine setting. It is for this reason that the researcher finds urgency in producing one and trying it in the internet.
Based on the syllabus, the instructor-researcher developed online materials, games and exercises, which were uploaded to Quia, slideshare, nicenet, quizmoz, and trackstar websites. Most of these websites are for free. The modules were tested to both fast and slow learners where the experimental group (pure online in computer laboratory) used the proposed modules; while the control group, the traditional textbooks in its designated classroom.
After the use of the proposed modules, the t-test revealed that the online group performed better than the traditional class with the probability of .001 in the Midterm grades, Final grades, and Posttests.
The online students evaluated their virtual experience the presentation and discussion of the online materials very well done; their interaction with the instructor superior and in an overall perspective to a large extent satisfied with online instruction.
Online teaching is a competitive alternative for the traditional classroom education in which online games, quizzes, and exercises are innovations that fascinate students. For online materials to effectively address students’ needs, they should contain all the required sources for learning including objectives, instruction, format, dynamics, and evaluation.
The various freesites available in the internet can be combined for the development of online modules and quizzes in all courses.
