Title
The Role of Formulated English Instruction in Taiwan.
Presenter
Pei-chih Peter Lin
Abstract:
Traditionally we had been teaching English language using formatted instructions such as grammatical rules and vocabulary memorizations in non-English speaking countries. There had been many changes on the way we teach English over the decades. However, in many cases “teacher centered instruction” is still the main focus of the language instruction and the teaching of the grammar and memorization is still widely practiced.
Both teachers and students spend countless amount of time looking into the formulas and structures of the English language itself, but lack the real practice of English in many places. We will look into and discuss the two of the common method still used in the English language instructions, and how the grammar and vocabulary memorization methods effects the students’ learning process, where one size fits all instruction is no longer the popular practice to fit today’s trend.
This paper will attempt to redefine the role of the English language instructions; the current practices and their effects on the English instructions, its effect on the learners’ behavior, how the tests, certifications, and motivations plays a role in the ELF learning and teaching. We will also look into some of the language instructional methods that could be applied to the EFL classroom to help students’ English learning and raise their English proficiency.
Keywords: EFL, ESL, English Language Instructions, English Grammar formula, Language Teaching Methods, Traditional English Teaching Methods
