Title
The role of the English foreign language (EFL) teacher
Presenter
Michelle Kawamura.
Abstract
The role of the English foreign language (EFL) teacher goes beyond being an instructor of language mechanics. Rapid globalization has raised the need for multicultural awareness and respect. Many languages such as French and Spanish, among others, are used in global activities. Despite this, English remains the second language most studied and spoken internationally. English has become the bridge between many countries. EFL teachers are the ambassadors of their countries and guides to other non-English-speaking cultures. Many countries have English as their compulsory foreign language from as early as junior high and now even elementary school. Because of its importance, we must not neglect the power it possesses to potentially affect the people who learn the language. EFL teachers have the responsibilities to integrate intercultural learning with language and to promote global understanding and empathy.
Teacher’s Role as Character Influence: Respect
English teachers are essential figures to students, as their thoughts, feelings, and expressions affect students' motivations in learning English and their interest in other foreign cultures. EFL teachers should possess a positive, unbiased attitude at all times in the classroom. Showing respect to different cultures through instruction will set a positive example to the students and will affect their attitude towards intercultural issues.
Teacher’s Role in Bringing Different Cultures to the Classroom: Materials
Selecting materials which introduce different cultures can increase intercultural interests and cultural comparisons, and strengthen one’s own cultural identity.
Teacher’s Role as Facilitator
Teachers should oversee discussions of social, economical, environmental, and other issues of various countries to promote global awareness and to foster an empathetic mindset.
Teacher’s Role as Research Guide
Teachers should encourage students to broaden their views and knowledge of different cultures by means of other readings, the Internet, and other activities. Articles in foreign publications, online searches, and community-sponsored international activities can bring students a step closer to intercultural awareness.
Above are some examples of the many roles an English language teacher must possess as today’s English foreign language teacher.
