Title
The Effect of Gender Difference upon Vocabulary Learning Strategies Using and Reading Comprehension in a Foreign Language in Taiwan

Presenter
Yi-Chun Charlene Chen

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to understand different vocabulary learning strategies used by different gender and the relationship between EFL students’ vocabulary levels and their comprehension in reading English texts. EFL teachers in Taiwan could also get a hit on how to help their students to improve their reading comprehension in English texts.
Three hundred and thirteen Taiwan EFL university students from three universities located in southwest Taiwan took part in this study. Each participant was required to take two tests, included a vocabulary level test and a reading comprehension test, and completed a vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire with a student background questionnaire.

In the research question one, the demographic factor showed slightly influence toward the students’ vocabulary level, yet, the result of research question one did not show any statistically significant difference between the demographic factors and the vocabulary level. The outcome of research question two, on the other hand, demonstrated male and female students might use different vocabulary learning strategies to have better comprehension while they were reading English texts. It also pointed out students would spend more time on learning English might use particular vocabulary learning strategies. The result of research question three indicated that the higher vocabulary level the students had, the higher reading comprehension level in English texts they got, which matched the close correlation between vocabulary and reading comprehension from previous investigations and studies. Moreover, the strategies used most frequently by students were rehearsal strategies while the less frequently used strategies were encoding strategies.
