Title
The Global Spread of English and its Pedagogical Concerns for English Language Teaching in Pakistan
Presenter
Mian Shah Bacha
Abstract
The researcher has attempted to find out the status of English as a global language while assessing the pedagogical concerns it creates for the post graduate English language teachers and students. The interrelationship between the teacher and students and the students’ understanding of the global nature of English has also been observed. The spread of English as a unilateral and globalized language cannot be fully understood without appreciating its hegemonic and imperialistic nature. It must also be pointed out that English poses a serious threat to the integrity of local languages and cultures. Nonetheless, irrespective of these serious shortcomings, English is still badly needed within Pakistan as a means of world communication, education, acquisition of technology, and development. It is, therefore necessary that traditional teaching approaches towards English as a global language should change. The traditional Native Speaker Based Pedagogy needs review within the Pakistani socio-cultural context in order to empower English learners toward more confidence in their language-learning task. English instruction and its global status, therefore, needs a paradigm shift.
For this purpose, a twenty item Lickert Scale questionnaire having five categories regarding English as a global language was developed and was administered to post graduate students and English Language Teachers (ELT). Later on, interviews based on ten questions regarding English as a global language were conducted to assess the status of English as a global language and its impact on the local languages and cultures.
Key Words:- The status of English as a global language, interrelationship between the teacher and students, English as a global language and its impact on the local languages and cultures
