The EFL Teacher as an Entertainer.

Abstract:-
The paper examines a shift in the focus of teaching English in India- from teaching English Literature to teaching English language. It reviews the report of the National Knowledge Commission of India and tries to present how the role of an English language
teacher has changed over a period of time – from Guru to teacher/advisor and later on to facilitator/counsellor and friend. It narrates the experiences of how a teacher has to change
to cater to the needs of the present students who have a lower level of motivation.
The advanced teaching materials innovative teaching methodshave enabled to bring in the
element of entertainment in a language class-room.Innovative materials like songs, games
puzzles, riddles and participatory techniques can motivate students to learn language,
inject interest, bring in fun and entertainment thereby make language learning quicker and also improve retention. Finally the paper presents some examples of entertainment in learning i.e. Edutainment.
Key words – Shift teaching - English language- teacher’s role change – students’ motivation level – entertainment in education-effective interesting enjoyment.
Biography- Veena is teaching English in a town, Dhule in India for the last 34 years. At present she is working as the Head of the Dept. of English in Z.B.Patil College, Dhule. She is a trained Facilitator ,and conducts Work-Shops for students to develop Basic Skills in Spoken and Written English. She is a trained Counsellor and Conducts work-shops and Counselling sessions to promote Study Skills and prevent distress in students. She is interested in innovative techniques and material for teaching the English Language which is also her area of research. She has edited a number of text-books as a member of the Board of Studies of North Maharshtra University, Jalgaon, India.
