Abstract :
The role of teacher in the language classroom, especially the ESL classroom, has changed drastically over time. The teacher has changed roles from being a master of the classroom to a guide and to a facilitator. The paper examines the role of the teacher in the ESL classroom in the current times. It is interesting to know that the ESL teacher, instead of performing a single role, has to switch over to several tasks in a single session. The multiple roles that the teacher has to perform are varied and contrast. The teacher is – a friend, a guide, a facilitator, a participant (pupil), a counselor, an examiner, an evaluator, an actor, a disciplinarian, a leader, etc. and above all the teacher, more often, is the only source of target language. The paper also discusses the difficulties faced by the teachers in colleges in Gujarat (India) in carrying out these multiple tasks. It concludes that what ever be the short comings the ESL teacher should continue to make the classroom atmosphere favourable and enjoyable for language learning.
